The BTC Colour Cube Advent-ure debuted in December 2024 as an interactive Advent calendar experience, combining daily colour insight with some ‘countdown to Christmas’ fun.
Here’s a peek at what my work desk looked like as I was working on prototypes for the first Advent-ure…
And here’s what one of the first Advent-urers had to say just three days into the December debut…
“This is THE MOST SATISFYING thing!! To build these colour cubes! OMGosh! I have my Cyan, Magenta and Yellow mini cubes scored and cut and ready to go. So simple yet so complex, and truly brilliant. I have a theory as to how the advent-ure cubes are going to work, but I'm also ready to be surprised, as my brain hasn't figured out all the codes and pieces yet. SUPER excited to see what's next!”
An Advent calendar is such a fun way to countdown to Christmas.
But the random reveal and surprise of discovery can also be a fun-damental way to count up and get started (or re-started) on your personal colour journey, any time of the year.
Just because it isn’t Christmas doesn't mean we can't still enjoy unboxing and then boxing up a new colour every day, right?
Building 27 little DIY Mini Colour Cubes is an ideal way to build colour confidence, and the 3 x 3 x 3 Basics gamut has all the basics covered.
Players from around the world played along during that debut December event, cutting nine sheets of paper into smaller panels, then folding and fitting them together to make 27 different 3-dimensional Colour Cubes.
The colours were revealed in (mostly) random order, but by the end of the challenge, it was clear, when it comes to learning colour in three dimensions, there’s nothing random about it.
BASICS IS ABOUT TO GET BETTER…
At its most basic, The BTC Colour Cube Advent-ure is a month-long Mini Course with a colour-by-colour breakdown of the 12 Hues, 6 Tints, 6 Shades, and 3 Achromatics that connect together in BTC’s 3 x 3 x 3 3D Basics Colour Cube.
Sure, this Colour Cube is pretty. But it’s also ‘power of 3’ powerful, the signature icon of the BTC brand, and the gateway framework for the entire BreakThroughColour system.
The Basics Cube is one of the six 3D models you can build yourself using my free downloadable resource, The BTC Colour Cube Starter Set.
If you’re a BTC Colour Card collector, chances are you’ve already built a full-sized Basics Cube like the one I’m holding in the photo above.
And if you don’t have BTC Colour Cards, The BTC Colour Cube Advent-ure is a guaranteed gateway to exclusive ‘Advent-urers Only’ access when these resources become available.
FROM the ‘POWER OF 3’ TO THE POWER OF 3D…
This Advent-inspired challenge features a unique collection of 27 individual DIY Mini Colour Cubes.
Each Cube represents a different colour, and the colour is clearly identified with one of BTC’s infographic Colour Code icons on at least one of its six sides. On the other sides, carefully placed inset swatch squares reveal other colours, clues to each Cube’s place in the bigger 3x3x3 Basics colour space.
The Cubes are put together with paper panels, cut from the printed pages of a downloadable PDF.
Here are the panels for the first three Colour Cubes, cut and ready for assembly…
And here are the Cubes after construction (no glue, tape, or other sticky stuff required!)…
It’s not exactly a spoiler to show you these first three Colour Cubes. We start with these three because Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow are the primary Hues, ingredients that we use to make every other colour in the entire BTC collection (and FYI, if you go beyond just the Basics, there are 400 colours all together!).
Daily email deliveries will give you a focused look at each of the 27 Basics colours on their own, not just what they are, but why they are.
Each email will also include a custom graphic like this…
All the Mini Cubes feature just one colour.
But they each have different inset codes, depending on what kind of colour they are (Hue, Tint, Shade, Achromatic) and where they belong in the colour space (corner, edge, face, or hiding inside).
Your daily email will include a visual ‘key’ to show you exactly which panels you’ll need and how they match together to complete each Cube’s unique construction.
You’ll also get clues about how the codes on each panel reveal other colour connections with other Cubes in your growing collection.
Building a cute little Colour Cube every day for the 27 days may sound like a big task. But honestly, once you have all your panels cut, you can get the job done in less than three minutes a day.
As each new Cube expands your collection, the connections between them become more obvious.
By time the challenge is done, you’ll have 27 individual Mini Colour Cubes (one for each of the individual colours in the 3x3x3 Basics colour space).
But here’s the breakthrough bonus…
You’ll have the colour space itself, a cumulative model that is truly greater than the sum of its parts, building what I know will be your new favourite interactive colour tool, a Cube for every colour, and every colour in its place.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS…
STEP 1 :: SIGN UP AND REGISTER!
To confirm your spot before the next Advent-ure starts next month, register for the BTC Colour Cubes Advent-ure before the end of this month.
$27 🇨🇦 ( ≈ $19 🇺🇸)
STEP 2 :: PRINT YOUR PDF
On Day 1, I’ll send you an email with your Colour Cube Advent-ure PDF, a downloadable document similar to the BTC Colour Cubes Starter Set.
And BTW, if you haven’t built your Starter Set Yet, what are you waiting for? It’s a free prelude to this premium Advent-ure, and it’ll get you warmed up and ready for the daily build construction zone.
The premium difference between the free Starter Set of six Colour Cubes and this main event Mini Course is this:
Instead of panels for just six cubes, this Advent-ure version will have 162 different Colour Cube panels, enough to score, cut, fold, match, tuck, and build a total of 27 new Mini Colour Cubes.
You can cut the Cube panels as you need them, or cut them all at once. Just don’t put your Colour Cubes together until each daily Colour Cube colour is revealed in the daily Advent-ure emails.
STEP 3 :: BUILD YOUR FIRST 3 COLOUR CUBES
To give you the first three days to print your PDF and get a jump on the game, the Day 1 email will tell you which Cubes to build for Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3.
The Day 1 email (and all the other emails to follow) will also include specific instructions for exactly how to arrange the panels of each Cube before you assemble it.
Remember, each Cube represents one single colour in the Colour Basics gamut, but not all the panels are the same.
STEP 4 :: ON DAY 4, BUILD CUBE 4, AND SO ON…
The Day 4 email will reveal the next Colour Cube colour, with instructions for its assembly.
Daily emails will follow after that, revealing a new random Colour Cube colour every day.
Your daily Advent-ure assignment is to find the panels for each Colour Cube and put them together correctly.
Keep your completed Cubes in a special place as your Advent-ure collection grows. Display them on your desk, line them up on a shelf, or stack them in your studio.
Before you know it, you’ll be at…
STEP 27 :: COMPLETE YOUR FINAL MINI COLOUR CUBE
By the time we get close to the end of the month, you will have a complete collection of 27 cleverly-coded Colour Cubes.
Clever you!
But the Advent-ure doesn’t end there…
A traditional Advent Calendar has 24 daily doors. That was just enough to highlight BreakThroughColour’s most basic Hues, Tints, and Shades, and an extra three days after Christmas gave us time to bring it all together with three Value-able Achromatics.
But here’s the ‘breakthrough’ bonus…
Did I say 27 Colour Cubes?
I meant 28…
STEP 28 :: YOU’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BOX
I have often called my original colour system ‘colour for both sides of the brain.’
Being able to discover and decipher individual colours one by one is one way to expand your colour vocabulary. Like sorting and shuffling your way through BTC Colour Cards, these individual Mini Colour Cubes will help you hone in on what makes each colour unique.
But it’s also important to understand how the colours connect, in straight-row flows, double-axis grids, and (the most powerful configuration of all) a complete 3x3x3 3D Colour Cube.
Each Mini Colour Cube is labelled (on at least one of its faces) with a BTC infographic Colour Code icon.
Here’s a preview of all the colours and their Codes…
Sorted into rows, there are six Corner Hues, six Connector Hues, six Tints, six Shades, and three Achromatics.
And even though you can sort and sequence these 27 individual colours into all sorts of sets and schemes, there is only one way to arrange them all together according to their primary ingredients.
That’s why this Advent-ure also includes a bigger bonus Colour Cube…
The grand finale is a full-size 3x3x3 Adventure Cube that shows you where all the colours belong in the bigger 3x3x3 Basics Cube, and gives you a ‘perfect fit’ place to store all your Minis in their proper colour space places, like this…
How fun (and functional) is that!
Okay, maybe they don’t magically put themselves away inside this custom container…
But I promise, once you know BTC’s code secrets, you’ll have no trouble arranging them in the right rows and columns.
RE-INVENT YOUR WHEEL
As a form factor for navigating through Hue, Value, and Saturation, Colour Cubes have been an intrinsic part of the BreakThroughColour system since I first started developing it more than fifteen years ago.
As you can see, all kinds of Colour Cubes are always within reach in my workspace…
And here’s a peak at some of the paper prototypes I made when I was first designing this ‘cube-a-day’ challenge…
These are just six of the 27 unit Cubes we’ll be building
Play along with me as we unbox the Basics Cube like never before, not only building these colourful little Cubes one by one every day, but building your colour confidence every day of the year.
